ABOUT MARIA OGRYDZIAK

Maria Ogrydziak, AIA Architect and AIA California Council John S. Bolles Fellow, is an expert in California Central Valley architecture, with 400 built regional projects. Since 1985, she has designed attainable, extraordinary spaces for everyday lives. The hallmarks of her custom homes and gathering spaces are inspired geometries, light-filled interiors, and strong connections to the land.

As an architectural policy leader, Maria serves as a permanent supportive housing expert on the AIA California Steering Committee and as a member of the California Architectural Foundation’s board of regents. She is a former president of the AIA Central Valley Chapter, founding the region’s annual Experience Architecture Festival. She is the architect and founding team member behind Paul’s Place, a community-based housing solution in Davis that recently received a Special District Council Award from the Urban Land Institute, and a member and architect of Yolo Community Builders, working with communities and groups to help them build permanent supportive housing solutions.

Maria taught architectural design at MIT, Stanford, and UC Davis. She earned a Bachelor of Architecture from MIT and was the university’s first female student body president. She is also a painter and sculptor, exhibiting in museums and galleries in Northern California, working from Davis in her self-designed artist loft. Her book, Framing the Valley: Maria Ogrydziak Houses, published by ORO Editions, debuted as Amazon’s #1 New Release in Vernacular Architecture worldwide.

FRAMING THE VALLEY:
MARIA OGRYDZIAK, HOUSES

My book Framing the Valley features eight case study houses, projects where trailblazing people—with modest and luxurious budgets—worked with me to craft remarkable lives. Projects include Art Barn, a steel horse barn transformed into an art gallery; Flight House, a budget-friendly remote-work homestead; Edge Loft and Music Box, remodels of California’s classic ranch-style and mid-century modern tract homes; and Iridescent, a 15,000-square-foot luxury homestead clad in shimmering glass.
