RHYTHMS OF LIVING
MODULE TEMPORARY DWELLINGS
For those who stay for a season or a spell
CAPAY VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
Sometimes, dwellings are meant to be temporary, based on the rhythms of the season, like harvest times, or affording short-term opportunities to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect to nature, such as an artist residency or wellness retreat.
The Module design concept centers on temporary housing based on standards and repeating patterns. Essential prefabricated Butler Systems structural steel components form three configurations corresponding to Capay Valley hillside, river, and meadow site typologies. The dwellings’ primary walls pivot fully open to connect to the landscape, linking the temporary residents to the land and its cycles.

In the Hillside Site configuration, the housing is embedded into the downward slope, offering views down and out.

In the River Site configuration, the dwellings stretch over the land with views to the river below.

In the Meadow Site configuration, the flat surroundings allow pivoting openings into the fields, extending the interior space outward.

Each concept features a shared space, housing a kitchen and common area.

In the Meadow design, the dwellings frame a central courtyard and create a communal heart to the complex.
